When pairing up of stripes with florals or stripes with polka started on the runways and showing up in fashion magazines, people said NO ! and later people further said HELL NO !! And for good reason no one wants to spend time or invest money in buying clothes just for the heck of it , wearing it just one day somewhere and then NEVER wearing it again. Mixing patterns on patterns needs to have a proper way of styling it. If you don’t , you might end up looking as though you spilled a great amount of coffee on you this morning 😛

There’s always a cool lady that turns heads as she walks by in her effortlessly put together outfit. She’s smart, stylish and has an eye for color and pattern. Do you ever wish you can mix prints and patterns like an expert? It’s not as hard as it looks.

So this post is about how mixing patterns on patterns in the right way can turn out to be a unique fashion statement for you !

THE BLACK AND WHITE FUSION :

The best way to dip your toe into this trend is pairing up black and white prints and patterns with each other. As in the solid world , black and white is something that goes with almost every colour and they serve as an anchor for the rest of your outfit when you throw in something like a colourful floral.

KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY ! THE COLOUR FAMILY

Feeling emboldened? Your next challenge: try the trend in living color. The best way to do this is to keep your stripe and print in the same color family. For intance , if you are wearing a blue printed shirt , try to pair it with jeans of the same colour with some other pattern. Have a look at these outfits to get a clear picture .

A general rule thumb : if one piece has lots of colour , try to use the other piece just to pick up on one of those colours (along with neutral shades like black , white or tan) It will keep the outfit matchy and not haphazard.

TAMP DOWN THE ACCESSORIES :

Since you’re already breaking new ground in the pattern-matching game, don’t spoil your hard work by cluttering up the look with too many extraneous accessories. When in doubt, go with a neutral like beige, tan, white, or black for your shoes and handbag, and keep jewelry minimal. If you do want to add some additional color to your outfit, try picking up on a shade that’s complementary to your stripe or print (but doesn’t add more pattern).

Just don’t add more than one extra color to the party via accessories: either coordinate a bag and shoes or shoes and jewelry in the same shade, or keep the other components neutral.

SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE :

Everything I’ve mentioned about stripes above is equally true when it comes to pairing florals and polka dots. Again, the best way to start off is with a simple black-and-white dotted piece, which you can then match up with a more colorful floral. Once you’ve mastered that look, move on to bolder match-ups.
